Case in point: this latest release sees them return to Peyrot, a Grande Champagne house Old Master Spirits have worked with before. Long-time readers might remember their 63yo Peyrot, which I considered a steal at $349AUD. Well, here we have its slightly older sibling - a year on in cask and just ten dollars dearer.
Distilled in 1961 and aged in French oak before bottling at cask strength, this 64-year-old Grande Champagne is limited to 162 bottles, with an RRP of $359 and a release date of 25 June 2026 (next Thursday).
Old Master Spirits "Peyrot" V.61 A.64 1961 Grande Champagne Cognac (43.8% ABV, Cognac, 64yo, Grande Champagne, France, 1 of 162 bottles, $359 RRP)
Colour: Burnished copper.
Nose: Rich berries and honey-buttered toast lead the way, with plenty of fruitiness sitting over a lovely underlying earthiness. It's the kind of nose that rewards a bit of patience — the fruit and the earth play off each other rather than one dominating.
Palate: Incredibly rich here — caramel sauce, caramel tart, vanilla bean, then a turn towards rich black coffee, with just a hint of oak to keep it all in check. For 64 years in wood, the oak is remarkably restrained (as if often the case with these old Cognacs).
Finish: Red grapes, with medium-to-long length.
Rating (on my very non-scientific scale): 92/100 (Martin). It's the combination that wins it for me — all that fruit up front, then those more complex, earthy notes underneath. At $359 for a 64-year-old Grande Champagne, it once again has me wondering how OMS keep pulling this off.
Old Master Spirits "Peyrot" V.61 A.64 1961 Grande Champagne Cognac will be available to order from 25th June 2026 here. Like previous releases, I imagine it won't last long. I'm ordering one.
Thanks to Deni & David at Old Master Spirits for the sample.Cheers,
Martin.
